Matthew Joy

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Fr. Matthew is married to Alsie, a retired teacher. They have two daughters, Calre and Sarah, who live in London.

Ordained priest in 1965, he served two curacies in Stockport and Sunderland. From 1969 to 1985 he was Vicar of Holy Trinity Hartlepool before moving to St. Paul's Masbrough in Rotherham.

Here he developed an interest in Islam and the local Pakistani Community and in 1995 moved to St Benedict's in inner city Birmingham where he was also the Bishop's Advisor in Christian/Muslim Realtions.

He retired to Oxspring in 2005 where he maintains (even now!) an interest in youth work and the church.

One of his interests is chess and in all his parishes he has organised chess clubs in local schools. He continues this in St. John's, Oxspring and Penistone Grammar School.
